"Rheumatoid arthritis is absolutely NOT a disease confined to the elderly but can affect people of all ages, including children. This article suggests differently which only compounds lack of awareness about this condition amongst society including some GPs, many employers and the general public. It is hard enough coping with society's misconceptions about this disease without the media adding to the problem. The article therefore needs to be amended and further research carried out by your reporter in order to amend current misinformation."

These are my comments i submitted to Daily Mail but not there yet, had to tick loads of boxes, submit email address, tick more boxes and then it said they may or may not be published - let's hope someone's comments get through...

thanks for putting this up Paula.
I have posted a comment too. I think it is good however it does frustrate me that they put the word elderly. I'm only 16 and even though sometimes I feel restricted like an old woman I certainly am not!BigGrin
It also annoyed me about the comments that are already up there putting down drugs. Embrel has made my life so much easier and I don't know what I'd do without it.
I hope our comments get put up soon.

interesting particuarly the telegraph article.
far better picture of RA than daily mail which seems only be about elderley not getting diagnsois.
when we read that RA is more common to strike at much earleir age.
does seem alot general public only think elderley get it though pften had comments of shock but i thought only old people got that so nras got lot work to do and us to change that kind info.
thanks paula.

Daily Mail has posted that no further comments will be published

-maybe this means they are researching our points as several of us seem to have commented along the same themes - let's hope so!

...maybe a future, more realistic article is being planned, well done Paula for flagging this one up! ThumpUp

Hmm ... the very fact that we have pointed out the error of their ways as far as a 'disease of the elderly' goes probably doesn't bode well for the Daily Mail. They probably daren't post our comments because they are all factual, true, life experiences. Wouldn't want to be upsetting the readership and sales of the paper!

Awareness of RA, despite the huge and ongoing efforts of NRAS, is still sadly very lacking. Much work to be done here!

I won't post my thoughts on the readers of the Daily Mail here - they would certainly be edited out!

Two more comments have appeared, one of which (An excellent one from Julie H of Epsom) reinforces the fact that RA is not a condition purely for the elderly.

As I've had no reply to the email I sent to the Daily Fail, (and assume many other members who contacted them haven't either) I've sent an email to NRAS about it as follows.

Quote:
Dear NRAS

A fellow NRAS member (Paula C) posted a link on the forum to an article in the Daily Mail, following the publication of the Select Committee's report into RA. (http://www.nras.org.uk/members/forum/YAF/default.aspx?g=posts&t=731)

The Daily Mail article appeared at

http://www.dailymail.co....needlessly-say-MPs.html

I know that a number of members submitted comments and emailed the paper about the misleading headline used for the article, which implies that it is the elderly who have RA, when we all know it can affect us at any age,

It's a tough battle to try and disassociate RA with the general "it's only old people who get arthritis" perception and I feel that the article doesn't help. The Times and The Telegraph also did a story on the report but didn't imply that it only applied to the elderly members of society.

As the Daily Mail haven't even acknowledged our comments and emails, would it be worth NRAS contacting them about it? Especially as NRAS is mentioned in the article.
Apart from the headline and first sentence the rest of the piece doesn't mention the condition only applying to the elderly, but it is the headline that people will see and this is what I feel could cause confusion.

I do hope you don't mind me contacting you about this, but I do feel that if we are to improve awareness of the condition and the devastating impact it can have, that the media should make things clear in such articles.

Best wishes
Joanne

I hope folks here and NRAS HQ don't mind, but I feel that if we are to raise awareness of the condition we need the media to properly portray the condition and write headlines accordingly.

Jo.
